Dorothy Louella (Eastin) Overby, 97, passed away Tuesday, November 26, 2024 in Las Vegas Nevada with her family by her side.
Born on October 14, 1927 in the family farmhouse in Greentop, Missouri, Dorothy was the second of five children of James Ray Eastin and Cecil Dorothy (Nichols) Eastin. She was married for 73 years to the late Thomas Shirell Overby who passed away on December 1, 2020.As a child, her family moved to a farm in Farmington Iowa, where she was a member of the Farmington High School Class of 1945 and a member of the girls’ basketball team. As a senior, Dorothy and a friend passed the U.S. Civil Service Exam and upon graduation, the U.S. government offered them jobs in Washington, D.C. paying their train travel expenses from Farmington along with providing housing.Dorothy met Thomas on the Independence Day weekend in 1947 when he was stationed by the U.S. Navy in the Washington, D.C. area. As Thomas was going to be transferred, they were married on October 25, 1947 at Foundry United Methodist Church, Washington, D.C. in a double ceremony with another Navy couple.Dorothy was employed by Abbott Laboratories, Abbott Park, IL for 27 years as Quality Control Manager. She retired in March 1989. She and Thomas would travel the U.S. for bowling, square dancing and ballroom dancing. They were fans of the Chicago Bears and Cubs.Central to Dorothy’s life was her family. She was predeceased by her parents and her siblings David (Bud) Eastin, Joan (Eastin) Smith, Rosco (Rex) Eastin and Shirley (Eastin) Schaplowsky and her husband, Thomas S. Overby.She is survived by her two sons, Thomas J. Overby (Diane), Las Vegas, Nevada and Ray S. Overby (Cynthia), Lake Villa, Illinois, four grandchildren and three great grandchildren. A third son, Frank B. Overby, died in childhood.Dorothy will join Thomas in their resting place at Townsend Cemetery, Dixon, Ky. Graveside services will be held on Saturday May 3rd, 2025 at 11am with Rev. Kerry Smith officiating.In lieu of flowers, the family wishes memorial contributions to Children of Fallen Patriots Foundation at www.fallenpatriots.org or 1818 Library Street, Suite 500, Reston, Virginia 20190.
